Dear Friends,
what a wonderful world of passion, swing and joie de vivre, full of jazz and pink cocktails for a blue lady - and the devil may care… lush life and funny valentines, pork pie hats and tailgates, sophisticated wit and the gutbucket, ghost notes and the jungle style, playin' dirty water from a swordfishtrombone
- or in short words:
we are back with Jazz at the Maze.
Our Core Team - the MAZE All Stars:
Wolf - tenor sax, Lennart - hammond organ, Vinícius Cordeira Prado - percussion and Chet Baker like vocals, Bob - piano and vocals (a lá Tom Waits)
- and special guests: July (from Ireland not from London) - vocals, Gijs Andriessen - piano and vocals and more guests expected.
Don't worry about getting home late at night - or early in the morning - the Maze will provide a kombi going down the hill - just ask for a ride.
And we are getting noble: Bohemian beer will be available at 6R$ - or Black Princess, the black beauty in Brazilian Beers...
See you soon here!

One of the golden securty rules of Rio is never go by yourself to a
favela, specially at night... Well, The Maze in is the place to break
it! This amazing art gallery and bar (and also a B&B) is hidden on
a calm favela in Catete, at the south zone of Rio. Every first friday
of the month, this place turns into a jazz club, where cool locals and
well informed foreigners meet to listen great jazz, bossa nova and
samba. All that with great caipirinhas and an amazing view of Rio. And
if you are a musician, dont be shy to talk to the musicians and perform
with them, is highly recomended by then.
I just dont place a highly recomended because the only beer sold is
Priums, a bad brazilian beer. Arrive early to get a good place with the
view and get the discount, paying R$ 5 to get in.

Êêêê! Um brinde ao primeiríssimo post no blog do The Maze Musical !
No
último dia 29 de março o the Maze promoveu o provável último show da
banda Brisa, acompanhados pelos amigos Os Subterrâneos e de Luisa
Mandou Um Beijo. Apesar de tudo ter sido combinado um tanto em cima da
hora, o evento acabou sendo um arraso: mais de 100 pessoas! Saiu
matéria de página dupla no jornal de domingo e tudo. Aliás, a elogiosa
matéria escrita por Olívia Mendonça (do jornal O Dia) provocou mudanças
no The Maze.
Agora,
o the Maze quer se estabelecer gradualmente como um lugar marcado pela
música boa e que fomenta a criação de música inovadora. Pra isso, o the
entrar. Depois das 22h, a entrada é de R$ 12, a não ser pra quem tem o
flyer, que continuará pagando R$ 10 pra entrar. É só imprimir o e-flyer
desse post.

Just wondering how this website has been done? The story began about a year ago, when hammond organ player Lennart from the Jazz Night first went to Bob's house in the Tavares Bastos Favela. It was a meeting as friends, nor did Bob know Lennart was into Jazz, nor Lennart had any ideas about Bob's singing talents...
But one thing was clear: a new website was needed for Bob's Bed & Breakfast, which was still under construction. Bob and Lennart brought ideas together, and a first page was created.

 Breakfast
The inn opened in time for the 2005 end-of-year celebrations, starting with four units.
Each unit consists of a bedroom with double bed and a private bathroom.
There is a panoramic upper varanda and small kitchen for guest use.
Breakfast is taken in the lower hall and is included in the daily rate
with regular barbecues and parties according to guest contribution.
Already there are seven bed and breakfast units as well as four
self-service flats (bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen). By the
end of 2007 the MAZE plans to offer a further ten bed and breakfast
units. All rooms will have original art works which may be aquired.
There is an art gallery on the street level. A small shop selling
comunity-made souvenirs will open shortly.
You may do your booking here - Normal tariffs are R$ 80,00 single occupation and R$ 100,00 double occupation.
For Carnival we are fully booked so far - but you may still try to contact us personally, in case somebody cancels, there may be some "last minute" chances.

At six years old, he tore a picture from a magazine, a little white house fringed with coconut palms and stuck it to his bedhead.
Son of a clergyman and a playwright, Bob studied fine arts in London, was sculptor on Stanley Kubrick's 2001, A Space Odyssey, a war cameraman in the Middle East and a BBC TV correspondent in Brazil. During the making of more than four hundred documentaries, he broke bread with rich and poor, poets and gangsters, cowboys, ministers, thinkers, musicians, generals and mothers of the tortured. He wandered through dazzling palaces and the rubble of destroyed civilisations. Longing to return to painting, he opted to build a studio home in a Rio favela. Underneath he created a community centre with adult literacy schooling and a free pre-natal clinic followed by an art gallery.
